Your Fensa Certificate

We have lots of certificates in our house, for good behaviour at school, swimming and other sporting achievements and some for raising money for a good cause close to our hearts.  Mostly, they are proudly displayed on the fridge held in place with random magnets nestled amongst pieces of artwork and important reminders of when to put the bins out!

We also have a special box file called ‘Important Docs’ which house a myriad of ‘certificates’ for our home.  Hidden in there will be our FENSA certificate but what is it actually for?

FENSA stands for the 'Fenestration Self-Assessment scheme' and is government-authorised to allow self-certification compliance under Building Regulations without the need for a separate assessment from Building Control.  Finesse have been proud members since its inception in 2002.

A FENSA certificate isn’t just a ‘nice-to-have’ like the other certificates in our homes, it’s a ‘need-to-have’ because the certification means the home improvements carried out have been completed by a professional company which means:

     > What has been installed confirms compliance with Building Regulations

     > The installation is energy efficient

     > It’s registered with the Local Council

     > The company has an Insurance Backed Guarantee scheme (IBG)

     > It will provide essential information for when the property is sold

Finesse register your installation with FENSA once your installation is complete.  FENSA will then issue the certificate directly to you through the post or via email.  This can sometimes take a few weeks to arrive after installation but is no reason for concern.

We are regularly assessed by FENSA throughout the year.  They do spot checks on properties where we are working to ensure that are complying with Building Regulations.  If there is anything amiss a report is produced and after the problem has been rectified a reinspection is carried out.  The process is rigorous and is designed to protect customers from poor workmanship or errors.  FENSA also insist that each team of installers carry an MTC card which proves they have been assessed and qualified to fit according to FENSA guidelines.  All of our teams are registered MTC fitters and therefore FENSA approved.

Your FENSA certificate will be issued for the replacement of external windows, Doors, roof Windows and roof lights in your home against the relevant Building Regulations.  To note, FENSA doesn’t cover replacement Windows and doors for Conservatories, porches, new builds, extensions, repairs (frame not included) or commercial properties.  It also does not cover Doors where the glass within it is less than 50%.

When you are moving to a new house solicitors commonly ask for your FENSA certificate, therefore it is important to keep it safe.   If you do misplace it we are unable to re issue a new one as they can only be issued through FENSA.  If you do require a new one, please contact them directly and they will send a replacement for a fee.  Solicitors sometimes ask for a FENSA certificate for items installed that do not require a certificate but please do not hesitate to contact us if you are unsure and we can talk you through it.

Once you have your certificate, we think it’s definitely worthy of a quick display on the fridge, taking pride of place as recognition of the beautiful improvements you have made to your home!  But then filed away carefully in the ‘Important Docs’ box secure in the knowledge that as FENSA themselves say ‘the FENSA certificate is all the proof you need of a job done right!’
