CASE STUDY – PERIOD PROPERTY RENOVATION; A SOLUTION WITH FINESSE
Jo and Dave moved into a beautiful period property, a dreamy family home with a sweeping staircase, original fireplaces, plenty of space and an idyllic garden.
However, the windows were posing a problem, timber single glazed they were allowing heat to escape and causing bills to rocket…but they were original and had unusual lead work which they desperately wanted to retain. So they began getting quotes for replacement timber windows, they did not even consider UPVC as had the common misconception that UPVC was not appropriate for period properties. They even considered having their original glass turned into triple glazed units in the hope they could retain them and have the timber frames replaced too. Then there was the matter of the garden to solve; on creating a bedroom on the top floor they had promised their daughter her very own view. It was all getting very complicated which is when we got involved.
On a visit to our Showroom they soon realised that UPVC does not mean white windows. They were amazed at the choice on offer and began to appreciate that foiled profile might just be the solution they were looking for providing a period feel with the benefits of modern secure, energy efficient windows. White foil is soft and delicate with a convincing timber look. Not only did the profile fit their requirements but our tear drop handles and decorative stays would replicate their originals perfectly.
They also began to explore the different designs that could be achieved using dummy sashes to help achieve symmetry that was important to them. They began to get excited about what could be achieved.
This just left the lead design. With our bespoke glass design service we were also able to produce a template of their existing glass to be carefully reproduced in antique lead creating a sympathetic but practical solution.
They mentioned their idea of designing a new window in the eaves that would create a view of the garden and possibly a window seat to enjoy it from. This would require having building inspectors involved and a specialist roofer’s skills, all of which they assumed would not be a service we could offer. We were of course delighted to offer our services to design, take care of the planning and co-ordinate the project.
Jo and Dave now have stunning white foil UPVC windows installed in their period property, with antique black handles and decorative stays. The glass is now energy efficient and double glazed with Planitherm/Diamant argon filled units carefully decorated with antique lead designs.
The brand new bow window sits well in the eaves as if it has always been there, even the original external decorative tiles were re fitted around the new window. They achieved their objective to create a window seamlessly inserted into a building that is centuries old, they now had a very special room with a view. The house is now warm and secure but they have not compromised on a sympathetic restoration, the carefully chosen profile and attention to detail on the lead work and fixtures mean the character has been retained and the installation has only enhanced their beautiful home.
