We have all seen the Facebook and Paid Search Ads…
“Free Double Glazing”
“Government Funded Double-Glazing”
and “Get your Double-Glazing upgrade paid for”
and some people even click through and give their details out, only to be bombarded by the “NOT FREE” hard-sell sales pitches from lots of companies!
So here are the facts:
There isn’t an “double glazing grant scheme” supported by the government in the UK running at the moment. There is an energy saving grant called the ECO4 (Energy Company Obligation) which will run until March 2024 which can potentially be used for double glazing. These are granted by your local council (please note not all councils are taking part in the ECO4 scheme), there are no set criteria for eligibility but generally the grant is only applicable to those in most need of financial help who can be considered to be in fuel poverty.
The ECO4 scheme grant normally covers loft Insulation, cavity wall insulation, solid wall insulation, and boiler replacements, but can be used to cover some or all of the costs for a double glazing upgrade, but as mentioned above the eligibility criteria will exclude most homeowners, and those who do meet the criteria are then subject to a detailed home survey before any full or partial grant can be applied.
What happened to the Green Homes Grant scheme?
Hailed by the then Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, as a key factor in his green industrial revolution, the Green Home Grant Scheme launched in 2020 with a £1.5bn budget and was aimed to help households benefit from a range of fully and partially funded energy efficiency home improvement measures to help reduce energy consumption and reduce bills.
The grant actually only upgraded about 47000 out of its target of 600,000 planned homes with a total spend of £314m of which £50m was spent on the administration of the grants. The Green Home Grant scheme ended in 2021.
